Die "Capanne a tholos" (Kuppelhütten) sind Steinbauten von umherziehenden Hirten oder Bauern, die ohne jeglichen Kleber erstellt wurden, oftmals aus zwei Räumen bestehend, eine für den Hirten, die andere für die Hunde. Oft umgeben kleine Steinmauern diese Hütten, als Zaun für die Herde.
Die abruzzesischen Hirten verstanden sich auf die Kunst, diese THOLOS zu erbauen, das Wissen wurde immer an die nächste Generation weitergegeben.
Sie erinnern strukturell an die apulischen Trulli und die sardischen Nuraghen.
Die meisten von denen, die immer noch an den Hängen der Maiella existieren, wurde von der Antike bis in die fünfziger Jahre des 19. Jh. gebaut. Die Berge der Maiella und des Gran Sasso Massivs sind übersät von tausenden dieser Hütten.
Auch heute noch werden sie überwiegend von Hirten im Sommer benutzt, dienen aber auch als Ställe, Scheunen und Lagerplatz von landwirtschaftlichen Geräten.
Bei einer Wanderung stößt man unweigerlich auf sie, am häufigsten in der Nähe von Pagliari, Roccamorice, Cerratina und Fosso Sant'Angelo in der Nähe von Lettomanoppello. Aber auch bei Decontra in der Stadt Caramanico und im Giumentina-Tal im Gebiet von Abbateggio. Im Valle Giumentina befindet sich eines der größten Tholos in der ganzen Maiella.
Wer es lieber etwas bequemer mag, folgt einfach der Straße von Roccamorice ins Majelletta.
The "Capanne a tholos" (dome huts) are stone buildings of wandering shepherds or peasants made without any glue, often consisting of two rooms, one for the shepherd, the other for the dogs. Small stone walls often surround these huts as a fence for the herd.
The Abruzzo shepherds knew how to build THOLOS, the knowledge was always passed on to the next generation.
They are structurally reminiscent of the Apulian trulli and the Sardinian nuraghi.
Most of those that still exist on the slopes of the Maiella were built from antiquity to the fifties of the nineteenth century. The mountains of the Maiella and the Gran Sasso massif are dotted with thousands of these huts.
Even today, they are mainly used by shepherds in the summer, but also serve as stables, barns and storage space of agricultural equipment.
During a hike you will inevitably pass by them, most often near Pagliari, Roccamorice, Cerratina and Fosso Sant'Angelo, near Lettomanoppello. But also at Decontra in the city of Caramanico and in the Giumentina Valley in the area of Abbateggio. Valle Giumentina is home to one of the largest tholos in the whole of Maiella.
